Firestick Downloader Not Working: Install Blocked or App Missing
Sideloading on Firestick fails at one of four points, and each has a distinct fix. Work down the list — the permission toggle is the cause roughly three times out of four.
Work through these in order
- Turn on Install Unknown Apps for Downloader specifically. Go to Settings, My Fire TV, Developer Options, Install Unknown Apps, and switch it ON next to Downloader. Enabling it for a different app does not carry across — the permission is per app.
- Unhide Developer Options. Newer Fire OS builds hide the menu. Go to Settings, My Fire TV, About, highlight Fire TV Stick and click it seven times. Developer Options then reappears in the My Fire TV menu.
- Free up storage. App not installed usually means the stick is full. Go to Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications and uninstall anything unused. Aim for at least 1 GB free.
- Check the code was entered correctly. A single wrong digit downloads nothing or the wrong file. Re-enter the code carefully, and make sure you are typing it into the URL box rather than the search box.
- Clear the Downloader cache. Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications, Downloader, then Clear Cache. A part-downloaded file from a failed attempt will block a retry.
- Restart the Firestick. Settings, My Fire TV, Restart. A full restart clears the installer state that causes silent failures after several attempts.
- Check your Fire OS version. Very old Firesticks (first generation) cannot run current player apps at all. If nothing installs regardless of settings, the stick itself may be the limit.

Related questions
Is sideloading allowed on Firestick?
Yes. Install Unknown Apps is a standard Amazon feature in the Fire OS settings, not a hack. Downloader is itself an official app from the Amazon store.
Downloader says the file is not supported
The download did not complete or fetched an HTML error page instead of the APK. Clear the cache and try again — usually a temporary network issue.
The app installed but will not open
Force-close it, then reopen from the Apps row rather than the download prompt. If it still fails, uninstall, restart the stick and reinstall.
Do I need Downloader at all?
Only for apps not in the Amazon store. On Samsung, LG, Android and iOS you install directly from the device store instead — see our device tutorials.
