M3U vs Xtream Codes: Which Should You Use?
These are two different ways of delivering the same subscription. Neither is more legitimate than the other — they just work differently, and one is noticeably better on most modern players.
Work through these in order
- What an M3U playlist is. A single long URL pointing at a text file listing every channel and its stream address. Your player downloads that file and shows the list. It is simple and works almost everywhere, including basic media players like VLC.
- What Xtream Codes is. An API login using three fields: server URL, username and password. Rather than downloading one flat file, the player queries the server for live channels, VOD, series and the programme guide as separate categories.
- Why Xtream Codes is usually better. It organises content properly into Live, Movies and Series, pulls a more reliable EPG, and loads faster because the player only requests what it is displaying. On IBO Player Pro, Smarters, XCIPTV and Formuler this is the option to pick.
- When to use M3U instead. Use M3U if your player only accepts a playlist URL — VLC on desktop or Xbox, Kodi with PVR IPTV Simple Client, or older Smart TV apps. It is also handy for a quick test because there is only one field to paste.
- Converting between the two. They are interchangeable on our side. If you have Xtream details but need an M3U link, or the reverse, message support and we will send whichever format your device needs.
- Keeping the guide working. With M3U the EPG often needs a separate XMLTV URL entered in the player. With Xtream Codes the guide is included automatically, which is why it is the smoother choice for a TV.

Related questions
Does one give better picture quality?
No. Both deliver the same streams at the same quality. The difference is purely how the channel list and guide are organised.
Which uses less data?
Effectively the same for video. Xtream Codes is lighter on startup because it does not download the entire channel list at once.
My M3U link stopped working
M3U links can expire or change when a server moves. Ask support for a fresh link, or switch to Xtream Codes which is more stable long term.
Can I use both at once?
Yes. Most players let you add multiple playlists, so you can keep an M3U on one device and Xtream Codes on another using the same subscription.
